Macedonian Institute for Media is a non-governmental, non-political and non-profit organization founded by the Danish School of Journalism, USAID/IREX Pro Media and the Macedonian Press Centre in 2001. The Institute has gradually grown into a massive media platform in North Macedonia, encompassing into its professional network the bulk of the media outlets in the country. MIM enables free and easy access to media literature, up-to-date resources for professional development and education, media research and analyses as well as opportunities for joint production.
Thousands of domestic journalists from the country and the region, as well as hundreds of editors and representatives of state institutions and citizen organizations responsible for public communication have participated in MIMs activities, and were trained on professional journalism, promotion and/or advocacy. MIM introduced the topic of media literacy in North Macedonia in 2009. Since then, it has integrated the concept in its activities and has participated in regional initiatives on media literacy in the Balkans. Some 1500 primary and high school teachers were trained in media literacy and production of media content.
MIM is highly skilled in action research and pro-active and re-active analysis. In 2014-2017, the Institute had worked as national partner to a prestigious regional EU funded Program for Strengthening Media Integrity in SEE www.mediaobservatory.net, which provided a regional instrument for media research and monitoring for addressing obstacles to democratic development of media systems.
In September 2021, MIM and EU Delegation organized high level regional event “EU-Western Balkans Media Literacy Conference: Building Resilience to Disinformation”, to discuss current challenges in the public communication space, such as dealing with disinformation, impact on social networks and misinformation in redefining journalistic reporting and the quality of journalism, as well as the importance of media literacy for citizens in the new media environment. The conference was addressed by high-level EU representatives, the president of Republic of North Macedonia, politicians, media experts, representatives of state institutions, civil society and academia from the Western Balkans and the EU countries.
