SEENPM will hold its 2021 General Assembly at the Fažana Media Fest in Croatia on 11 September 2021.
In addition, SEENPM will organize public events at the festival in cooperation with the Ethical Journalism Network and Reporting Diversity Network 2.0.
The panel discussion Disinformation, Hate and Media Integrity, tobe held and streamed on 9 September from 19:30 to 21:00 CET, will look into how disinformation and hate campaigns, often directed at vulnerable groups, undermine the integrity and diversity of information in the public sphere. Prior to the panel, a documentary on “fake news”, Junk Folder, produced by SEENPM and Mediacentar Sarajevo within the Resilience project, will be screened. The film was directed by Alen Šimić, a young Bosnian filmmaker.
Moderated by Biljana Petkovska of the Macedonian Media Institute (MIM), the discussion will feature three speakers: Boro Kontić of Mediacentar, Sarajevo; Aiden White of Ethical Journalism Network, London; and Ivana Jelača of Media Diversity Institute Western Balkans, Belgrade.
The event Deploying Law to Silence Journalists, to be held and streamed on 11 September from 18:00 to 19:00 CET, will explore different ways in which governments and interest groups use legal means to censor dissenting voices. Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPP), different defamation laws and even anti-terrorism legislation are made use of to harass and intimidate journalists in particular.
Moderated by Sandor Orban of the Centre for Independent Journalism, Budapest, the panel discussion will feature Roberta Taveri of Article 19; Jeta Xharra of the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN) and Erol Onderoglu of Bianet, Istanbul.
