The Albanian Media Institute, a SEENPM member, in cooperation with the regulator, the Audiovisual Media Authority, completed a series of training courses aimed at improving coverage of children in local media.
A total of five two-day courses were organized in the months of July and September in cities Elbasan, Shkodra, Vlora, Korca and Gjirokastra. The aim was to have a good geographical representation, as well as to focus on cities with more media outlets.
75 local journalists working in local televisions and as correspondents for national media participated in the training sessions.
The training courses focused on improving reporting of children in audiovisual media. The main aim of the courses was to introduce journalists to the key topics, angles and ethical considerations to have in mind when reporting on minors.
The lecturers were professors at the Department of Journalism, media experts, well-known journalists, and representatives of NGOs dealing with children-related issues.
Some of the main issues addressed during the course included discussion of new topics on children that have not been covered, existing legislation protecting children, legal issues to have in mind when reporting on children, ethical considerations when interviewing them etc.
Specific attention was paid to audiovisual media legislation requirements and the existing bylaws and regulations on the coverage of children in audiovisual media.
Participants and lecturers discussed specific examples and challenges they have faced during their work.
This project followed a previous series of training courses held last year with journalists from audiovisual media based in Tirana.
