Brussels -The European Commission seeks online public debate on media freedom.
Freedom of expression and media pluralism are core values of the European Union and enshrined in Article 11 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union.
The media landscape is currently subject to rapid evolution and changes, resulting in the need for a large debate on the role of the EU. Against this background and as a result of a broad range of actions, a report has been finalized by an independent expert group, the High Level Group (HLG) on Media Freedom and Pluralism.
The High Level Group, which is fully independent, was established in October 2011 by Vice-President Neelie Kroes, and is chaired by the former President of Latvia, Professor Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga .The mandate of the group was to draw up a report for the Commission with recommendations for the respect, protection, support and promotion of pluralism and freedom of the media in Europe. The findings and recommendations of the Group are now public and are available on their page.
