Enhanced Media Literacy for Young People from Rasina District

The Center for Investigative Journalism Kruševac – CINK and the Drenovac Youth Club – DOK have successfully implemented a project that aimed to improve media literacy among young people from rural areas in four Pomoravlje municipalities in Serbia through a series of activities.

The project “For better media literacy of young people from rural areas and members of vulnerable groups” was implemented from early June 2024 to late March 2025 across four local governments – three from Rasina district (Kruševac, Ćićevac and Varvarin) and one from Pomoravlje district (Paraćin).

As part of the project, a survey was conducted on the attitudes of young people from rural areas regarding media literacy. The research was carried out on a sample of 200 respondents. Additionally, media literacy workshops were held for seventh and eighth-grade students in six schools from rural areas, attended by approximately 150 students. A debate was organized for representatives of civil society organizations that bring together members of vulnerable groups, focusing on their views of local media work.

A very important segment of the project was the Small School of Journalism, completed by six young people from Kruševac, Ćićevac and Paraćin. Some of them continued their collaboration with CINK even after the project ended.

“I believe we achieved several significant results through this project. Thirteen texts authored by young journalists from this area were published and promoted – ten journalists in total. Some of them are beginners while others have some experience, but working on this project helped them acquire new knowledge and skills. I also consider it extremely important that by publishing texts about socially vulnerable groups, we achieved better visibility for them in the public sphere and strengthened cooperation with organizations that serve this population,” says Slavica Tomić, project manager.

CINK emphasizes that the cooperation between the project partners, CINK and DOK, was at an exceptionally high level and that they plan to continue it in other activities and projects.

Among those who actively participated in the project is student and young journalist Luka Kijačić.

“The training I went through, the work on preparing texts as well as writing them and working with the editor allowed me to view journalistic work from a completely different perspective and dedicate myself to it fully. Now I’m already striving for new challenges in journalism,” emphasizes Luka Kijačić.

The project is funded through the Our Media sub-granting scheme, which has provided support to 21 local projects across the Western Balkans.
