The Fellowship for Journalistic Excellence provides financial and editorial support to professional journalists who have strong ideas for cross-border stories. This year’s theme is the Rule of Law.
Send your application with your proposal by March 10.
Each year, 10 journalists are chosen through open competition to receive funding and professional support to conduct in-depth research and write journalistic stories that reveal something new about our world — or that reveal the familiar in a new light.
As well as answering the who, what, when, where and why of your story, your proposal should answer the question: so what? Why should your readers care?
Applicants selected by an independent committee to take part in the fellowship will receive a €3,000 bursary, covering their fee as well as travel and research expenses. They will also attend international seminars and receive continuous one-to-one mentoring for their stories.
Stories from the programme will be published by BIRN and by prominent regional and international media outlets.
In addition, authors of the three best articles will be awarded € 3,000, € 2,000 and € 1,000.
Applications are welcome from mid-career journalists from Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia and Slovakia.
Guidelines, application form and tips for a strong application are available at the Fellowship website.
