Montenegro Media Institute (MMI) was established in 2000 as a non-profit and non-political organization dedicated to improving professional standards in Montenegrin journalism, journalistic ethics, the right of citizens to freedom of expression, and the development of free media. MMI pays special attention to developing media policies and media literacy by strengthening critical public thinking and act in the belief that the principles of ethical journalism are a valuable resource in upholding human rights. Its initiatives are also aimed at protecting the rights of vulnerable groups and young people in the media, preventing hate speech, free access to information, and improving digital rights in the online space.
MMI activities focus on training, research, advocacy initiatives, campaigns, publishing activities, and legislative initiatives. MMI organized numerous trainings, workshops, panels, and webinars in the previous few years with more than 1200 participants.
MMI is one of the pioneers of strengthening media and information literacy in society and is engaged in introducing the subject in primary and secondary schools. Its work is dedicated to harmonizing interests of the media community, improving professional standards, and developing citizens’ media and information literacy skills.
In the past several years, MMI has implemented several projects focusing on strengthening quality and credibility of journalism in Montenegro and developing media literacy policy and practice. Additionally, their work has focused on the youth and those living in small towns and rural areas, vulnerable to disinformation, propaganda, and hate speech. Several publications were published, such as Analysis of narratives containing hate speech and disinformation, National regulatory and self-regulatory framework against hate speech and disinformation, Media literacy for all students.
The Media Institute closely cooperates with professional media organizations in Montenegro, the region, and Europe. Besides being a member of the South East European Network for Professionalization of Media (SEENPM), MMI is a full-fledged member of the South East Europe Digital Rights Network and represents a platform for international cooperation between media professionals in Montenegro and their colleagues.
