UL Info and Punta Institute from Montenegro conducted research and educational activities in Ulcinj, Tuzi, and Gusinje with support from local media and civil society actors.
The organization UL Info, known as a community media outlet for its bilingual portal and its work in media, human rights, and intercultural initiatives, joined with the Punta Institute, which supports youth, minority, and local communities, to carry out the “Read It Correctly!” project, aimed at strengthening media literacy in the Albanian community in Montenegro.
The goal of the project was to increase understanding and promote media literacy among various target groups, including women from the public and social sectors, women’s forums and youth branches of political parties, primary and secondary school students attending classes in Albanian, and civil society organizations operating in minority areas.
“The most important activity in our project was research on media literacy conducted among primary and secondary school students in the municipalities of Ulcinj, Tuzi, and Gusinje. This research included over 300 students and is the first of its kind to be carried out in educational institutions where members of the Albanian national community in Montenegro form the majority,” said Mustafa Canka, director of UL Info and project coordinator.
Canka especially highlighted the bilingual brochure “Media Literacy in Minority Communities – The Albanian National Community in Montenegro”, which is also available online via the UL Info portal.
He noted that the project provided valuable insight into the state of media literacy within the Albanian community in Montenegro and in areas where they constitute the majority of the population.
“We are particularly pleased that during the project, we brought together a large number of Albanian journalists, intellectuals, and civil society activists from Montenegro as lecturers and collaborators. Many of them also took part in our media shows, held lectures, or appeared in video clips,” Canka concluded.
The “Read It Correctly!” project contributed to the development of critical thinking, better access to accurate information, and a more inclusive media space in which minority communities actively participate in shaping public discourse.
The project is funded through the Our Media sub-granting scheme, which has provided support to 21 local projects across the Western Balkans.
